Yesterday the news channel were full of discussion on Niketa Mehta Case and Today newspapers are flooded with right of abortion debate.
Niketa Mehta is a lady from Mumbai who is 25 weeks pregnant and wants to terminate her pregnancy because she has been told by doctors that her child is having serious heart diseases. Niketa Mehta had applied an application before Mumbai High court to grant her permission to do so as Indian Law do not allow abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
This incidence has raised a debate in whole india. Some opposing her move some supporting her view. My mind raises certain questions after hearing all the social, religious and legal debates regarding this issue.
Whole of electronic media gathered in supporting Niketa Mehta because they felt that is was her right to have healthy child, because the law is some 37 year old law and Medical Science has improved a lot and so abortion is possible after 25 weeks, Beacause our state is not capable of supporting such families having special children.
I personally feel Indian society is becoming negative, ruthless, hard hearted and too much uncaring that is why parents like Niketa and Harish have reached court to get their child aborted before it is born.
I am not mother so I don't know how it feels to concieve or have a baby. But what I have heard, seen is women love having babies. I have seen my mother caring and loving every child of hers equally irrespectable of our looks, intelligence or behaviour.
We have lost our faith in God and in medical sciences. I was extermely hurt seeing doctors especially child specialist and gynecs advocating termination. Has our doctor fraternity lost faith in themselves. It was so shameful to see one Dr. Gupta who is pedetrician adovating termination of pregrancy on NDTV- Hindi CHannel last night. What type of Doctor is Mr. Gupta. He should have faith in his medical science and his own skills. Few year back children with hole in their hearts used to live for couple of years now it is not so. Who knows tomorrow medical science will have answer to Niketa's child's problem.
I don't blame Niketa and Her husband for what they are upto. We want everything to be perfect. Perfect body, job, house, family, spouse, children. We hate imperfection. We want to be best according to other's wish. What if tomorrow Niketa is unable to concieve or Niketa dies during abortion. Doctors and Hospitals have found a soloution. They make family sign the bond before hand that they are not responsible if patient dies during operation and let family take risk. But it is their duty to guide patients what risks are involved.
If the High court would have allowed Niketa to abort her child. Next thing thousands of us would have done woule have been filling application to allow us to kill all those around us who are mentally retarted, sick, old and unabled to look after themselves or who are not so called normal.
It is Niketa's right whether she wants a child or not but I am surprized by the level of discussion that was carried out on every news channel advocating change in law. The so called intellectual reporters were supporting Niketa only because she was a mother.
What if today Niketa gives birth to a normal child and after few years the child meets an accident and becomes bed ridden, will she be given to kill her child because he is not normal.
There are thousands of family across the globe who have someone in the family who is unable to take care of themselves. But they haven't lost faith in the ultimate power house GOD or medical science. They are taking care of such people with a hope that some day miracle may happen.
I feel this is the time Niketa should make her child stronger in her womb the way Abhimanyu's mother did in Mahabharat. She should pray that her child is born normal and with less complication. She should rather than wasting her time in court room should think positively because Niketa's this very own child will creat some history because child became famous even before it is born. I wish Niketa may read this and believe that there are thousands hands praying for her child's health.
